Detention center closure urged

A national watchdog coalition is calling for the immediate closure of the Etowah County immigration detention center and nine others around the country. Andrea Black, executive director of Detention Watch Network, says–quote–“People continue to suffer in conditions that are an affront to human dignity. We are calling on the Administration immediately to terminate contracts with these facilities.” U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, began contracting 15 years ago with Etowah County and the Detention Center in Gadsden now holds an average of just over 300 detainees. The report said, “The conditions experienced by immigrants held at the Etowah County Jail are among the worst in the country.”
